Denali - Mink Lungs - The Reputation
Sharing members with Engine Down, Denali is led by singer Maura Davis. Although it’s on emo powerhouse Jade Tree, the band’s self-titled debut album is reminiscent of the early-80’s 4AD sound - you know, guitars and ghostly girl vocals. The Mink Lungs are a goofy good time just looking for an audience to happen to - and their guitars are as vicious as their Hula-Hooping. The Reputation stars Elizabeth Elmore, who made a splash a few years back with the band Sarge and then dropped out of music to study law. We’re glad to see Elmore returning from squaresville, particularly because her new band’s self-titled album (on Initial Records) is a winner, from the Sleater-Kinney-informed guitar assaults to her smoky reading of Elvis Costello’s "Almost Blue."
